From Random to Reliable: The Value of a Marketing Plan

Make a PLAN

Marketing often starts with the best of intentions. We put out a post one day, a newsletter another day, maybe a blog when time allows… but if we don’t have a clear plan, marketing can quickly become reactive, inconsistent and frustrating. (And who wants to keep doing something that feels so un-fun?)

Here’s the key to remember: Ad hoc marketing rarely works. Consistency is what builds visibility, trust and long-term growth. And consistency is much easier to achieve when you have a clear marketing plan in place… so it’s time to put on your planning pants and get organised!

Why Planning Matters More Than Spontaneity

A marketing plan gives your business direction and ensures that what you’re doing day to day actually supports your wider business goals.  It also prevents you from spiralling off on tangents or leaving things half-finished.

Without a plan, marketing often becomes:

  • Sporadic and easy to drop when things get busy

  • Difficult to measure or improve

  • Disconnected from sales and business objectives

With a plan, marketing becomes intentional. You know what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and who it’s for.

Start by Knowing Your Client

Every good marketing plan starts with understanding your ideal client. Before thinking about platforms or content, ask yourself:

  • Who is my ideal client? (their demographic, such as, age, gender, location, interests)

  • Where are they hanging out? (where do they go to learn – socials, email, websites)

  • What are they looking for? (what is their challenge or what are they seeking)

  • How can I help them? (your service or product, your solution)

When you can answer these questions, your marketing will become far more focused. You’ll stop trying to speak to everyone and start speaking directly to the people who are most likely to benefit from what you offer. Many businesses even find it helpful to picture one specific person and write as if they’re talking directly to them.  You can give them a name, hobbies, favourite foods…whatever helps you get inside their mindset!

Create Content That Builds Know, Like and Trust

Effective marketing content is about building relationships, rather than simply trying to sell all the time. A helpful way to think about this is through know, like and trust:

💡 Know: Share who you are, why you do what you do, and what you stand for. People buy from people, not faceless businesses.

👍 Like: Educate and inform. Show your expertise by explaining problems, offering insights and sharing useful advice.

Trust: Use case studies, testimonials and real examples to demonstrate that you can deliver results.

And always include a clear call to action. Don’t assume people will know what to do next. Give your viewers one simple action to follow – more than one will muddle the message, so keep it clear.

Plan for Consistency, Not Perfection

One of the biggest benefits of a marketing plan is that it helps you stay consistent without feeling overwhelmed.

Planning your marketing over the year, then breaking it down into quarterly, monthly and weekly actions, makes it far more manageable. You’re no longer starting from scratch each week, and you’re much less likely to let marketing slip when things get busy.  You can also plan for times when you want a break from marketing – everyone needs downtime! – and you can either get content made ahead of time or simply rejig your schedule in advance.

Consistency gives you the opportunity to review what’s working, refine your approach and stop activities that aren’t delivering value.

Marketing Should Feel Supportive, Not Stressful

At its best, marketing supports your business growth steadily and sustainably. Without a plan, it can feel like a rollercoaster of busy periods followed by worrying lulls. If you’re not sure where to start, or you know you should have a plan but don’t quite know how to pull one together, this is where support can make a real difference.
