The Power of Consistent Marketing: How to Build Trust and Win Customers
One of the most common questions small business owners ask us is “What return on investment will I get from marketing?”. It’s a fair question, but it’s also a tricky one to answer because marketing isn’t the same as sales. While sales focus on closing a deal, marketing is about building awareness, trust and recognition long before a customer is ready to buy.
Marketing is the ongoing process of telling your audience who you are, what you do, who you help and how your product or service will make their life better. And that message needs to show up consistently - across your website, social media, email marketing, printed materials and in-person interactions.
Why Marketing Matters Long Before the Sale
When someone meets you for the first time, either online or in person, the chance of them buying straight away is slim. More often, they’ll go away and research you. They’ll Google your business, browse your website, check your social media, read your reviews and see what others are saying.
This matters, because buyers today rarely make decisions after a single interaction. Research suggests people need around eight touchpoints before they feel ready to purchase, and for some it can be many more.
The more touchpoints you give them, and the more consistent your message is, the more confident they feel about choosing you. Every piece of content - a blog post, a social media update, an email newsletter, a testimonial, a case study - plays a part in guiding them gently down the sales funnel. The Power of Regular and Consistent Content
Consistency is one of the most underestimated elements of effective marketing.
We all know not everyone sees every social media post. Not everyone has time to read every newsletter. But if you show up regularly, the chances of your ideal customers seeing your content increase significantly. Over time, those interactions add up.
This is where long-term marketing really proves its value. For example, I worked with one of my clients for over 18 months, steadily updating her website, posting consistently on her chosen social platforms, sending out regular newsletters and keeping all of her visible touchpoints fresh and relevant. She told me later that she had never been so busy. When I asked why she thought that was, she simply said, “Because everyone knows about me now.”
It wasn’t down to one post or one campaign. It was the result of consistent, focused marketing over time.
Why Stop-Start Marketing Doesn’t Work
Marketing only works when it’s given the attention it needs. Posting once in a blue moon or sending a single newsletter and hoping for instant results is rarely effective. Think about the number of touchpoints required and the percentage of people who will see each piece of content. One-off efforts usually go unnoticed.
Consistent marketing with a clear message works, but it requires time, effort and planning. If you don’t have the time yourself, it’s worth investing in someone who can support you. Pick-up/put-down marketing simply won’t deliver the results most businesses need.
Looking Ahead
Whatever your plans for the year ahead, make sure marketing doesn’t fall to the bottom of your to-do list. Don’t focus on the ROI of one single action, but rather the combined impact of a well-planned, consistent approach. There are excellent tools available to help you measure what’s working, understand your audience and make improvements as you go.
