Beyond the Numbers: Marketing With a Human Touch
For many business owners, an accountant is someone they call once a year to file taxes or when something goes wrong with their VAT return. The relationship is often transactional, distant, and purely functional.
But the most successful accounting professionals today are no longer just processing numbers. They are positioning themselves as strategic partners - trusted advisors who help individuals and businesses grow, mitigate risk, and plan for the future.
The big challenge is… How do you communicate this online?
If your marketing feels dry, technical, or overly formal, you’re reinforcing the stereotype that you’re just a box-ticker. To attract high-value clients who want more than just compliance, you need to inject a human touch into your digital presence. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you have to be casual and lose your professional, authoritative edge. It simply means becoming more relatable and accessible, and clearly demonstrating your expertise in a way that resonates.
Demystify the Jargon
Accounting is full of complex terminology: accruals, depreciation, capital allowances, R&D tax credits. To a non-accountant, this can feel like a foreign language.
When you write content - whether it’s a blog post, a LinkedIn update, or a newsletter - avoid speaking at your audience. Speak to them. You have the knowledge to translate complex regulations into plain English, so help outsiders step into your world. Explain why a new tax change matters to their bottom line, not just what the regulation says.
💡Try this: Instead of posting “HMRC updates guidance on Section 38A,” try “New rules for buying electric vans: What it means for your cash flow.” You’re showing expertise by simplifying it, which builds trust and makes you approachable.
Show the People Behind the Practice
People hire people, not logos, yet many accounting websites feature stock photos of calculators, coins, or generic handshakes. These visuals don’t build connection.
Showcase your team. Share photos of your office, introduce your staff with brief bios that highlight their personalities as well as their qualifications, and share behind-the-scenes glimpses of your work. Did your team attend a conference? Celebrate a local charity event? Share it.
Humanising your brand reduces the intimidation factor – which is real for many, especially smaller businesses needing support. When a potential client sees friendly faces and real stories, they feel more comfortable reaching out with questions - even the ones they might be embarrassed to ask.
Solve Problems, Don’t Just List Services
Most accounting websites have a “Services” page that lists offerings: Bookkeeping, Payroll, Tax Returns, Audits. This tells clients what you do, but not how you help them succeed.
Shift the focus from features to benefits. Create content that addresses the specific pain points your ideal clients face. Are they worried about cash flow during slow months? Do they struggle with hiring the right staff? Are they unsure if they’re eligible for government grants?
By creating content that solves these problems, you position yourself as a proactive advisor rather than a reactive processor. You’re showing that you understand their business challenges, not just their ledgers.
Engage in Conversation
Marketing is a dialogue, so encourage engagement on your social media channels. Ask questions in your posts; respond to comments promptly and warmly. If someone asks a question in the comments of your LinkedIn post, answer it thoroughly and kindly.
This interaction signals to both Google and your audience that you are active, engaged, and responsive. It transforms your online presence from a static brochure into a dynamic resource.
A Note for Other Professionals
While this advice is tailored for accountants, the principle applies to all professional services. Solicitors, insurers, consultants, and architects all face the same challenge: moving beyond the perception of being purely transactional or technical.
Whether you're dealing with legal contracts, insurance policies, or strategic plans, your clients want to know that there's a knowledgeable, empathetic human on the other side. We explored this in more depth in The Invisible Expert: Why Visibility Matters More Than You Think, but the short version is this: by demystifying your field, showcasing your team, and focusing on solving problems, you build the trust necessary to win long-term partnerships.
